HOMES FROM HOME

Our picture below shows the interior of S.A.A.’s on-line office in Rio de Janeiro, tastefully decorated and with a typical South African touch in the murals. Other S.A.A. offices recently opened abroad are those at Operninghof 3-5, 1010 Vienna and with effect from September 8, 1969, in Sao Paulo at 270 Praca da Republica.

This brings the total number of S.A.A.’s representative “fronts” (regional and overseas) to no less than 41. As a point of interest, as from October 1, 1969, S.A.A.’S address in New York will be 605 Fifth Avenue.

HIJACK HEADACHE

I.A.T.A. views with very great concern the proliferation of forcible hijackings and armed attacks on aircraft on the ground, according to a statement by the Director-General, Mr. Knut Hammmarskjold. Since the beginning of 1968 some 90 cases of unlawful intervention have taken place, over half of them during the present year. It has been found that the vast majority are cases where action has been taken by mentally unbalanced or otherwise abnormal individuals. At the other extreme there is a small number of hard-core political actions some of which may be difficult to avoid under any circumstances. Apart from the safety aspect, the problems of regularity and economy cannot be ignored and it is sufficient to indicate that airlines are suffering heavy direct and indirect costs in connection with all of these hijacking incidents. The national economy of entire countries and more specifically their tourist business is suffering heavily and all this ultimately is reflected on the completely innocenL general public. I.A.T.A, considers that the problems of hijacking and armed attacks will only be solved if the perpetrators of these acts face the certainty of severe punishment for their potentially fatal activities and that such punishment be widely publicised. It is also felt that if appropriate psychological counter-measures were taken by governments and by their organisations, acts of unlawful inte-vention could probably be drastically reduced in number.

In this regard, the following statement was issued by the South African Airways following discussions between the Management and the S.A.A Pilots’ Association:

“South African Airways deplores acts of piracy and supports any international agreement among all countries that will effectively eliminate the problem. It is known that both I.A.T.A. (International Air Transport Association) and I.C.A.O. (International Civil Aviation Organisation) are actively engaged in dealing with this matter.

“South African Airways’ cannot support the action proposed by Ifalpa as it agrees with the I.A.T.A. director-general that such strike action cannot achieve results. Besides, this would merely inconvenience hundreds of thousands of innocent passengers. South African Airways, in conclusion, confirms that it would be illegal for South African Airways pilots to participate in a strike”.

ORGANISATION: AIR STATIONS

The designation of the officers-in-charge of air stations at Jan Smuts Airport, Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London, Bloemfontein and Windhoek are termed as Regional Manager (Airways); Afrikaans „Streekbestuurder (Lugdiens): as from October 1, 1969.

This arose out of the recommendations of the O and M teams which recently investigated the organisation and staff establishment at air stations.

The Regional Managers will be responsible for the coordination of all Airways activities in their respective areas and for sales promotion, staff matters and accounts work. In the case of Jan Smuts Airport the Regional Manager (Airways) will handle staff and accounts matters and co-ordinate all Airways activities between Jan Smuts Airport, Johannesburg (Rotunda) and Pretoria. The Deputy Commercial Director (Sales and Marketing) will continue to exercise direct control over sales promotion activities in the Reef and Pretoria areas.

Specific posts have also been provided at each air station to take direct charge of the air terminal and another io take direct charge of the airport at aforementioned centres. These officers will be designated Station Manager (Airways), Terminal or Airport, as the case may be and will be respon-sible to the Regional Manager (Airways).

Johannesburg (Rotunda), Pretoria, Kimberley, Upington, Keetmanshoop and Alexander Bay will be unaffected by the above decisions and will continue to function as before under control of their respective Station Managers (Airways).
