NUWE STRALERLUGVRAGDIENS

BOEING, BOEING:

According to statistics received from the Boeing Company, sales of Boeing commercial jetliners up to June 15, 1967, amounted to 1,600 of which 1,004 have already been delivered.

Delivery of the 1,000th jet came less than nine years after the first was handed over to an American carrier in August, 1958. Over the years, the company has rolled out an average of one aeroplane every 2.3 working days.

With so many Boeings already completed and delivered it is no wonder that a Boeing jet airliner lands or takes off somewhere in the world on an average of every 12 seconds. Each day the company’s products carry more than 185,000 passengers over 3.4 million miles. Thus in nine years’ service almost 200 million people have flown on Boeing airliners – either one of the big 707 series or one of the popular 727 trijets.

SKOF VOLTOOI:

„Hy was ‘n amptenaar by uitstek”, het mnr.

Fuhri.

NEW LOOK FOR MAJOR SOUTH AFRICAN AIRPORTS:

A scale model of what Jan Smuts Airport will look like after completion.

The biggest single building project yet undertaken by the South African Public Works Department to date, has just been commenced. The project, which is designed to improve the facilities of Jan Smuts Airport, in anticipation of the introduction of high capacity jet aircraft, includes the building of a new international passenger terminal, a large cargo building, a hotel block and a twelve-storey office block.

Tenders for the first stage involving excavation, piling and general preparatory work, have already been received. The building of a passenger concourse, adjoining the northern side of the present terminal and work on the basement of the international wing – the largest building of the complex – will form the second phase. This is due for completion by the end of 1969. By the middle of 1972 the overborder terminal and the new air freight block is expected to be completed. The existing concourse will then be transformed into a terminal for domestic passenger traffic only.

The new international flight unit will provide for two levelsthe upper level for departing passengers and the lower for incoming traffic. Both will be above the ground and will be serviced by 22 escalators and 19 lifts. In addition, the upper level will be reached by two elevated roads.

Attached to the international terminal will be a two-storey hotel built on stilts. A pleasant roof garden, a dining room, hairdressers, coffee shops, cocktail bars, duty-free shop, etc., will be numbered among the facilities available to passengers.

Apart from the immense programme at Jan Smuts Airport, details of extensive alterations and additions to the D. F. Malan Airport at Cape Town have also been announced. This entails the building of a new passenger concourse between the present terminal and the existing operations building. It will be of contemporary design with a gracefully curved roof, supported on four aluminium, marble-covered free standing columns. The colour scheme and artificial lighting will emphasise the floating appearance of the roof. Automatically operated doors opening into cut-off wind lobbies, will be installed whilst the building will be fully airconditioned. On the apron side of the concourse a protective “porte-cochere” will be provided. On the opposite side of the terminal arriving passengers will be protected by a wide canopy of aero-dynamic design which will serve as an appropriate introduction to the building complex.

Another airport which has been in the limelight of late is that of East London. A new passenger terminal has just been completed and was officially opened on May 27, by the Minister of Transport, the Hon. B. J. Schoeman, after whom it has also been named. Previously this airport was known as the Collondale Airport.
