HIGHLIGHTS FROM 1965/1966 ANNUAL REPORT
South African Airways’ Annual Report for the fiscal year 1965/66 once again reflects continued expansion and successful operations in all spheres of activity. Working Results Although there was a notable increase in expenditure, mainly attributable to the salary and wage improvements with operative effect from the beginning of October, 1965 pay month, and the stepping up of frequencies on the Springbok and Wallaby Services, the Airline showed a profit of more than half-a-million rand i.e. R623,767. The previous year’s figure was R2,205,347. The total revenue for the year under review amounted to R38.2 million, which is R3.7 million more than the previous year’s figure of R34.5 million, whilst expenditure increased from R32.3 million in 1964/65 to R37.6 million. Routes and Services Traffic, calculated on the basis of revenue-earning load ton-miles, increased by 9.4 per cent over the previous year, i.e. from 87.9 million to 96.1. Passenger journeys increased by 15.32 per cent from 625,661 during 1964/65 to 721,522 during 1965/66. With effect from 1st April, 1965, a pooling arrangement was entered into with the Portuguese Airline, T.A.P. and from 1 st January, 1966, with U.T.A., the French carrier. Since the close of the year pooling arrangements have also been entered into with Lufthansa and Alitalia in respect of traffic between South Africa and the home territories of these carriers. The fortnightly DC-7B service on the Wallaby route was improved to a weekly service as from 7th May, 1965. Revenue ton-miles on this route increased to 2.1 million, an improvement of 93.07 per cent over the previous year’s figure of 1.1 million. Passenger traffic carried on the services to Rhodesia and Lourenco Marques increased by 12.87 and 12.47 per cent respectively. During the year S.A.A. operated a total of 194 Domestic Standard class services weekly throughout the Republic and South West Africa. The number of passengers carried on these services advanced by 16.5 per cent to 482,205, whilst revenue load ton-miles improved by 16.6 per cent to 27.7 million. Skymasters on the South West Africa routes were replaced by Viscounts with effect from 1st October, 1965, and during the year 66-seater Viscounts replaced the DC-7B and DC-4 aircraft on all “Skycoach” services. A total of 123,573 passengers was conveyed during the year on Skycoach services. Charters A total of 116 charter flights was operated during the year to centres within the Republic and to the adjoining territories and 21 Boeing scheduled services were blocked off for the conveyance of charter groups to overseas destinations. Freight Freight ton-miles on the Springbok Service routes decreased by 3.51 per cent, whilst the regional and internal services reflected improvements of 43.29 per cent and 19.80 per cent, respectively. On the Wallaby Service freight tonmiles advanced by 144.99 per cent. Flight Training The Boeing 727 flight simulator was placed in full operation during the year. Thirty conversion courses on the various types of aircraft used were conducted. A total of 235 aircrew attended these courses which occupied 1,430 hours. Engineering and Maintenance S.A.A.’s aircraft continued to give efficient service and no major engineering problems were encountered. Intensive engineering planning work was carried out in connection with the introduction of the new Boeing 707-344B and 727-44 aircraft with their new type of engines. This entailed the training of personnel, procurement of initial spares stocks, preparation of the maintenance programme, improvements and innovations and tooling of workshops.Surface Transport
A total of 1.75 million miles, as against 1.73 million miles the previous year, was covered by S.A.A. buses, whilst the number of passengers conveyed on these buses increased from 206,513 in 1964/65 to 217,420.

BOEING BAPTISED BY BEAUTIES WITH BOTTLES
Champagne splashed when 15 pretty girls in airline uniforms christened the first Boeing 737 twin-jet aircraft which made its official debut on January 17, 1967. The ceremony took place at the Boeing Company’s Seattle, Washington, final assembly building and representatives from more than 30 airlines attended.
The hostesses represented those airlines which have already placed orders for a total of 124 of these new jets. They are Braathens S.A.F.E. of Norway, Britannia Airways Ltd., Irish International, Lake Central, Lufthansa, Mexicana, Northern Consolidated, Pacific, Pacific Southwest, Pacific Western, Piedmont Airlines, South African Airways, United Air Lines, Western Airlines and Wien Air Alaska. Miss Wendy Woods, Secretary-Receptionist in S.A.A.’s San Francisco office, bashed the bottle of champagne on behalf of our airline. The Boeing 737, smallest member of the Boeing family and of which S.A.A. has two on order, is scheduled to make its first flight early this year; deliveries will begin in late 1967 after an extensive flight-test programme. This first aircraft, a Boeing 737-100, can carry up to 101 passengers over distances of 100 to 1,300 miles at a speed of 580 miles per hour. Latest figures released by the Boeing Company indicate that a total of 904 Boeing jetliners in commercial service by 46 world airlines have already flown 3,927,962 revenue miles and have logged 8,845,700 flight hours. DRA ‘N GLIMLAG OOR
Eerste indrukke tel die meeste . . . !

“DO A GRATE JOB LIKE HE DONE”
From America comes the story of two letters written by an illiterate salesman, and a note written by his boss, which have had salesmen in that country laughing wryly.
“Dear Boss – I seen this crowd which they ain’t neva bought a dime’s worth of nothing from us and I sole them a kupple hundred thousand dollars worth of guds. I am now going to Chawgo”, the first letter said.
Two days later a second letter arrived: “I cum hear and I sole them, half a miljon”, it said. Both letters were posted on the bulletin board with this note.
“We ben spending too much time hear trying to spel, instead of trying to sel. Let’s watch thoes sails. I want everybody should reed these letters from Gooch who is on the rode doing a grate job for us, and you should go out and do like he dun!”

HOOG OMHOOG
